Nausea is defined as a feeling of sickness in the stomach with an impulse to vomit.  Its origin is from a Greek word that means seasickness. Nausea is a symptom of many diseases and causes and can be short lived or prolonged.  It is that queasy feeling in your stomach or throat that is sending a message to your brain that something is wrong.  It is one of the most uncomfortable sensations and symptoms of any sickness and is not necessarily related to the stomach.  There are many causes of nausea with a few being motion sickness, pregnancy, problems in the gastrointestinal tract, brain, stomach flu, food poisoning, medications, or chemotherapy.  Nausea can be physical or psychological in origin and can occur in both children and adults with the causes differing because of age.  No matter the cause, nausea is debilitating and is a miserable feeling.

Between fifty and ninety-five percent of pregnant women experience morning sickness between the sixth and twelfth week of pregnancy with some suffering throughout the pregnancy with intermittent episodes.  The root causes of morning sickness are somewhat controversial, such as, too many animal products because of the possibility of parasite and pathogens, and ingesting vegetables that have been sprayed and treated with chemicals to prevent insect infestation and morning sickness with vomiting is a way to rid the body of anything harmful that would damage the mother or the fetus. Another controversial cause is morning sickness reduces sexual intercourse to prevent spontaneous abortion, and Dr. Freud’s theory of morning sickness – the result of the mother’s loathing for her husband! Some of the leading theories are increases in the hormones estrogen and progesterone, low blood sugar, and increased sensitivity to odors.  Morning sickness is one of the first signs of pregnancy and although it is called morning sickness and most often occurs in the morning possibly due to low blood sugar levels, it can occur at any time of the day. Most of the problems that occur during pregnancy, with morning sickness being one of them, are due to sudden and various hormone and metabolic changes taking place.

Motion sickness is when the eyes, the sensory nerves and the vestibular apparatus of the ear send conflicting signals to the brain.  The symptoms of motion sickness vary from severe headaches to queasiness to nausea and vomiting while flying, sailing or riding in automobiles or trains.  Dizziness, fatigue and nausea are the most common symptoms. Women are affected by this condition more than men with the elderly and children under the age of two not being affected.  The most common theory of motion sickness is that of a defense mechanism against neurotoxins (toxins acting specifically on nerve cells).  When poisons are detected by the postrema in the brain, a conflict arises between vision and balance.   The inner ear is sensing motion, but the eyes are not seeing it (such as on a ship with no way to see out). The result of this conflict causes the brain to conclude that one of them – the eyes or the ears is hallucinating and induces vomiting to get rid of the imagined toxin. In other words, motion sickness is the result of inner ear signals motion to the brain conflicting with visual signals of stillness sent to the brain by the eyes.

Morning sickness can result in dehydration, acidosis, malnutrition, and substantial weight loss.  Morning sickness usually does not last beyond the first thirteen weeks of pregnancy and is not harmful to the baby.  If, however, excessive vomiting occurs and food cannot be kept down, it may be harmful to you and the baby if left untreated, due to lack of nutrients and electrolyte imbalance.
